R&D – Marketing Department units the know-how of all the Group, gives customers a total support and turns the customers’ needs into functional and innovative solutions. It offer outsourcing to realize projects from the idea generation to the implementation on the market working together the clients searching also new materials, optimizations and new processes. The Department pays particular attention on sustainability topics.

Design

It can give customers a complete support and turn requirements and needs into functional and innovative solutions. The Department offers its expertise for all the activities of Research, Development and Innovation.

Solutions

It develops new functional packaging design solutions meeting customers’ needs, market promotions and trends, bytests in loco in order to check the requirements and the validity of the solutions offered.

It has the enough expertise to implement new machinery and pilot projects by working with the customers and with the suppliers and it is able to get solutions that are unique in the sector.

It is in contact with Universities, Institutes and Research Centers to offer the clients ever-innovative and trendy solutions.

Progetti

BIOLINE, Modified BIOpolymers for the Development of an Innovative Product LINE (ARS01_01032), aims to develop new plastic materials designed for the creation of innovative products, primarily for the packaging sector, that are compostable and characterized by specific functional properties, including high barrier performance. The proposed solutions will be unified by the combined use of paper, as the main material, and plastic, without compromising the compostability/recyclability characteristics of the final product.

The project's goal is to demonstrate the multi-valorization of bio-based and compostable plastic materials for the development of packaging with high innovation content and reduced environmental impact.

CoSMico – Development of Smart Containers for the Production of Microgreens (F/200011/00/X45).
The project focuses on the development of a new range of products made of corrugated cardboard for the active packaging of microgreens, replacing the plastic trays currently in use with cardboard alternatives. In these new containers, instead of peat, biodegradable growing media will be incorporated—specially designed to support the germination and growth of seedlings through the sole addition of water.

The new biodegradable supports, integrated into a multilayer structure with nonwoven fabric (TNT) and superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), promote plant growth using only water.

By the 18th month, the project achieved: a suitable growing medium with specific cultivation strategies, three types of bio-based SAPs capable of absorbing up to 500 g/g, reducing irrigation needs by 50%, and fertilizer use by up to 30%, and a 150 gsm TNT with excellent absorption properties.

By the 36th month, pre-industrial batches were produced using a pilot line, with compostable supports and microgreens of comparable quality to those grown using conventional methods.
